Nemo
In 2024 Nemo won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland – the first openly non-binary winner in the contest’s history.
Nemo Mettler grew up in Biel/Bienne, the bilingual city on the language border between German- and French-speaking Switzerland. As a child Nemo learned the violin, piano and drums and appeared in musical theatre productions. As a teenager Nemo began rapping in Swiss German and had a first hit in 2017 with “Du”.
In late 2023 Nemo came out as non-binary, saying they did not see themself as either a man or a woman. In 2024 Nemo represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with “The Code”, a song about the journey to this realisation, performed in a pink skirt on a spinning disc. Nemo won the contest – the first openly non-binary winner and the first Swiss victory since Céline Dion in 1988.
After the win Nemo called on Switzerland to legally recognise a third gender, which the Swiss government had previously rejected, and spoke in Bern with the federal minister of justice. The 2025 contest took place in Basel because of Nemo’s victory.
Nemo uses the pronouns “they/them” in English and no pronouns in German.
