Patrick Juvet
The Swiss disco star of “I Love America” spoke openly about his relationships with men – long before it was common in pop.
Patrick Juvet grew up in Montreux on Lake Geneva and studied at the art school in Lausanne. He worked as a model in Germany before turning to music. In the early 1970s he became a teen idol in France with romantic chansons, and represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973.
In the late 1970s, working with the producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, who were also behind the Village People, he switched to disco. Songs such as “Où sont les femmes?” and “I Love America” (1978) became international hits and played in clubs from Paris to New York.
Juvet was open in interviews and in his autobiography about having relationships with both men and women, and he moved in the gay disco scenes of Paris and New York. He also spoke openly about his problems with alcohol and drugs and his depression after his fame faded.
He later lived in Barcelona, where he was found dead in his apartment in April 2021. He was 70 years old.
