Sam Smith
The soul singer with the falsetto voice came out as gay at the start of their career and as non-binary in 2019.
Sam Smith grew up in Great Chishill, a village in Cambridgeshire, and sang in musical theatre and jazz groups as a child. They worked in bars in London while trying to break through as a singer.
In 2012 their voice on Disclosure’s dance track “Latch” attracted attention, followed by Naughty Boy’s “La La La”. Their debut album “In the Lonely Hour” (2014), with the ballad “Stay with Me”, became a worldwide success and won four Grammys. Smith said that the album was about unrequited love for a man. In 2016 they won an Academy Award for the James Bond song “Writing’s on the Wall”.
In 2019 Smith announced that they are non-binary and asked to be referred to as “they”. The step attracted support but also hostility in the British press. With the album “Gloria” (2023) and the song “Unholy” with Kim Petras – the first time an openly non-binary artist and a trans woman topped the US charts together – they celebrated queer joy and the body.
Smith has spoken openly about body image, depression and the pressure of fame.
