Denise Ho
Her support for LGBTQ+ rights and Hong Kong’s democracy movement brought political pressure into a successful Cantopop career.
Denise Ho was born in Hong Kong in 1977. She moved to Montreal with her family as a child, then returned to Hong Kong and won a major singing contest in 1996. Mentored by Anita Mui, she built a successful Cantopop career.
At Hong Kong Pride in 2012, Ho publicly came out as a lesbian. She used her visibility to support equal rights, joining a wider community campaign rather than keeping her sexuality separate from her public life.
Her support for the 2014 Umbrella Movement brought arrest and the loss of access to the mainland Chinese market. In 2019 she addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva about Hong Kong, drawing objections from Chinese representatives.
In December 2021 she was arrested in an investigation into Stand News, where she had served on the board. A further arrest in May 2022 concerned her role in the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund for protesters, a separate case. Ho’s experience shows the professional and personal costs of political dissent for a performer whose audience once extended across those boundaries.
