Conchita Wurst
The bearded drag character’s Eurovision victory made a striking image of gender nonconformity visible across Europe.
Tom Neuwirth was born in Gmunden, Austria, in 1988. Growing up in Styria, he experienced bullying as a gay teenager before pursuing a career in music and television.
In 2011 he introduced Conchita Wurst, a drag character combining a beard with long hair, glamorous gowns and a powerful singing voice. The image challenged the expectation that those features should belong to separate gender presentations.
Conchita represented Austria at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen with “Rise Like a Phoenix” and won. Hostile reactions before the contest gave the victory significance beyond the song, while supporters celebrated it as a rejection of intolerance. Performances at the European Parliament and the United Nations in Vienna followed.
Neuwirth has distinguished his own identity as a gay man from the female stage character. In 2018 he publicly disclosed that he was HIV-positive after a former partner threatened to reveal it. Continuing work as Conchita and in other musical forms has allowed him to explore different versions of performance and self-presentation, rather than remain confined to the image that first brought international fame.
