Frank Ocean
A singer and songwriter whose account of first love opened new space in mainstream R&B.
Frank Ocean was born in Long Beach, California, in 1987. Born Christopher Breaux, he grew up in New Orleans and moved to Los Angeles after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He wrote for other performers before finding an audience through Odd Future and his own recordings.
In July 2012, shortly before releasing “Channel Orange”, Ocean published a letter about falling in love with a young man when they were both nineteen. Intended for the album’s notes, it appeared instead on Tumblr. Its intimacy unsettled expectations in an industry where male same-sex desire was still often treated as something to conceal.
“Channel Orange” brought critical recognition and a Grammy Award. Its songs move through desire, inequality and isolation, combining carefully observed scenes with an expressive, unhurried vocal style.
In 2016 Ocean released “Blonde”, alongside the visual album “Endless”. “Blonde” further loosened conventional song structures, allowing memories and fragments of feeling to overlap. Across these records, love for men and women appears without a simple explanatory label. Ocean has generally let the music, rather than extensive accounts of his private life, carry that complexity.
