Harisu
A South Korean entertainer whose mainstream success brought trans visibility into public debate.
Harisu was born in Seongnam in 1975. She developed a career in modelling and performance before a cosmetics advertisement made her widely known in South Korea in 2001. Her stage name plays on the English phrase “hot issue”.
The commercial made her trans identity part of its appeal, bringing sudden celebrity and intense scrutiny. She followed it with music, including the album “Temptation”, and acting roles that extended her career beyond advertising. Her visibility challenged expectations in an entertainment industry with little space for openly trans performers.
In 2002 a court recognised her legally as female. That decision was an important part of her ability to live publicly as herself, although recognition did not remove the discrimination surrounding trans people’s work and family lives.
Harisu married the singer Mickey Jung in 2007; they divorced in 2017. Public discussion of their marriage and hopes of adopting children showed how closely her private choices were scrutinised. Her career brought representation to a broad audience while also exposing the limits placed on the people being represented.
