Elliot Page
An actor and writer whose work connects trans visibility with a wider concern for social justice.
Elliot Page was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1987. He began acting as a child on Canadian television, gained attention in “Hard Candy” (2005) and received an Academy Award nomination in 2008 for his performance in “Juno”. Roles in the “X-Men” films and “Inception” followed.
In 2014, speaking at a conference for LGBTQ youth, Page came out as gay. In December 2020 he announced that he was trans and that his name was Elliot. The following year he became the first openly trans man on the cover of Time magazine, discussing both the relief of transition and the pressures of public attention.
His character in “The Umbrella Academy” also transitioned, taking the name Viktor Hargreeves. Page’s memoir “Pageboy” (2023) explored his childhood, relationships and years of working in Hollywood while struggling to live openly.
His activism also extends to environmental racism. With Ian Daniel, he co-directed “There’s Something in the Water” (2019), a documentary about Black and Indigenous communities in Nova Scotia confronting industrial pollution and unequal protection of their land and health.
